I found him pacing the grounds on the opposite side of the castle. A piece of the outer courtyard was visible from my window and his dark form wandered into it as he paced. Bathed only in firelight he should have been difficult to make out, but my night vision had always been exceptional. He was in his demon form, a man-like shape I hadn’t seen him take since that first night.

His behavior was erratic, chaotic even, and he looked distraught. He was roughly grabbing his horns, running his hands over his head, throwing fire at the castle wall and watching it fizzle out. After one especially impressive explosion, he dropped to his knees, threw his head back, and roared to the night sky. His crimson scales shimmered in the flickering light, and the flames glinted off his horns. Muscles, visible even from here, rippled beneath the surface of his skin. People might call him a monster, even I, but there was no questioning this monster was terrifyingly beautiful, especially in moments like these.

Unexpectedly, he looked up, directly at me. It was too late to hide, and truth be told, I didn’t want to. I wanted to be seen. The rosy buds of my nipples pebbled in the cold and the moonlight highlighted my pale breasts. Crimson curls fell loosely around my shoulders and tickled the tops of my thighs. My bright blue eyes, framed by long lashes, sought my demon’s and held them, unashamed and truly unafraid. My modesty may have seen better days, but this man... my master had seen me at my best and at my worst. Only today had he touched and tasted me. Why should I fear his gaze?

For the few seconds our eyes remained locked, I was peaceful, connected and content. I wondered if he might feel the same until he narrowed his eyes and scowled at me. I cringed as he roared aggressively and shifted into the colossal, red dragon he embodied in the daylight hours. With a few beats of his massive shimmering wings, he was ruling the night sky the same as he did the day and was out of view in mere seconds.

I deflated as I turned and walked back to my bed, crawling under my covers and inhaling our mingled scents. It was wearing off already. The effects of his magic would soon disappear, and I’d be left with nothing but my own emotions. Would I hate him again in the morning? Would I miss his touch? As panic, pure and undiluted, rose in my chest, I knew his magic was gone from me. There was no calm left inside me, no magic, but still, I wanted him.

When had this monster become the object of my desire rather than the monster that enslaved and tortured? When had the exquisite torture become simply exquisite? I’d been telling myself it was the magic making me want him for so long, I had no idea when it had become me.

So, I wept. I wept for all that I’d lost and everything I wanted now. Things I didn’t want to want. How had I come to this?

I knew the answer as well as I knew the scent of lavender. I remembered my journey to this point with painful clarity. That first night with him, the first time I’d called that demon ‘Master’, that’s what he truly had become.
